Chapter

EIGHTEEN

Cole stood beside the gated entrance to the DRS neighborhood housing complex, waiting. Today, he was going to get his first behind-the-wheel driving lesson. He had spent time in a simulator, but this would be his first live road-work. His muscles ached from his woeful attempts to abide by Jim Morrison’s Ten Commandments, and he was looking forward to driving lessons, if only because it meant he could sit down for a while. Also, it meant spending time with Jimi Hendrix. To this point, the team’s response to him had oscillated from indifferent to cold to downright hostile, but Jimi had given him a mostly warm welcome.

The 1968 Corvette convertible he rode in when he first arrived at the Netherworld screamed down the street, top down, and pulled up beside him.

“What’s up, Jimi?” Cole called.

“You want to drive?” Jimi asked with a gleam in his eyes.

“Yeah, you bet!”

“Get in!”

Cole jogged to the driver’s side of the car, but when he went to grab the door handle, Jimi abruptly lunged the car forward a few feet.

“Whatchu thinking, man?” Jimi scolded, looking back at Cole. “You’re not driving this car.”

“Oh,” Cole said, chagrined. Moments later, as they got underway, he tried to laugh it off. “I remember when Wayne used to do that to Kevin on The Wonder Years. If I had a little brother, there’s no question I would have pulled that trick on him. So, Jimi, where are we going?”

Jimi didn’t answer. He just smirked at Cole and jammed the pedal to the floor.

Cole shifted in his seat, searching for a conversation starter. “Have you always been a great driver?”

“Nah, man!” Jimi laughed. “I was as blind as a bat, cat. King arranged for me to get this new surgery on my eyes, though, and it’s like I can see colors I didn’t know existed before! When I joined the team, Hank taught me to drive. He was our wheelman before me.”

Cole appreciated being able to experience the drive this time without the massive duffle bag in his lap. He could take in the scenery better this way. He noticed things he hadn’t seen before like a movie theater, currently showing Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace, according to the marquee out front. Cole remembered standing in line with Taylor for six hours to get great seats for that movie. That was only a few months ago, but it felt like a lifetime.

“Does the number two mean anything to you?” Cole asked.

Jimi just snickered.

“I don’t mean like that. Get your mind out of the gutter, Hendrix!”

“Nah, for real,” Jimi said, stroking his chin. “For musicians, two is a difficult thing. One is often easy. You stumble on some magic and write one good song or have one good album or even get one good riff. Sometimes, finding that second one is tough. They call it the sophomore slump. Lotta one-hit wonders out there.”

Cole paused to consider if this idea had any correlation to his discovery of a 2 in the symbol.
